(AURN News) — President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on cars and trucks imported from the European Union, escalating tensions with key U.S. trading partners.
“We have a trade deal with the European Union. They were not adhering to it, so I raised the tariffs on cars and trucks to 25%,” Trump said.
Trump announced the tariffs while accusing the European Union of failing to uphold a trade agreement negotiated by his administration in July.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the tariffs would take effect next week. He offered European automakers one alternative: build those vehicles in the U.S. and avoid the tariff. The announcement blindsided European officials. A lead EU trade negotiator called it a sign of “clear unreliability” and accused the United States of repeatedly breaking its commitments.
American consumers could see higher prices on European vehicles as early as next week.
