Trump chats with Obama, shakes hands with Pence

President-elect Donald Trump spoke at length with former President Barack Obama as they sat next to each other Thursday after former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral.

All five living U.S. presidents attended the service at Washington National Cathedral.

Obama was seated next to Trump, who was the first person to be seated in the president’s row. The two former presidents talked for several minutes as people were being seated at the funeral.

Both men smiled and laughed during the conversation.

Trump also shook hands with former Vice President Mike Pence. It was the first public interaction between the two in four years.

Pence broke with Trump after Trump urged the then-vice president to reject the 2020 election results. The two have traded barbs over the years since, and Pence launched a primary campaign challenging Trump along with other GOP candidates in the run up to the 2024 presidential election. Pence dropped out of the primary in October 2023 and said he had “no regrets” at the time.

Carter, the 39th president, died in late December at 100.
