Trump nominates Virginia GOP chair for Air Force post

(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump has nominated Republican Party of Virginia Chair Rich Anderson to serve as assistant secretary of the Air Force, pending Senate confirmation.

Anderson, a retired Air Force colonel and former Virginia House of Delegates member, has led RPV since 2020. If confirmed, his departure could shift the party’s leadership as it prepares for Virginia’s 2025 statewide elections.

In a statement to Virginia Scope, Anderson said he was honored by the nomination and credited Virginia Republicans for their electoral success in recent years.

“My family and I sincerely thank President Trump for nominating me to the United States Senate for confirmation as his Assistant Secretary of the Air Force. I am grateful to the President for his trust and confidence, which follows my 30 years of military service in the Air Force, the last eight at the Pentagon,” Anderson said.

He also credited Virginia Republicans for recent electoral gains, saying Trump’s nomination reflects the party’s success. “The Spirit of Virginia that Republicans have exemplified over the last four years has served our Commonwealth well and will be central to GOP successes going forward,” Anderson said.

While his confirmation timeline remains uncertain, Anderson said RPV would ensure a smooth transition in leadership. “Accordingly, RPV will soon announce next steps in a way that permits an orderly transfer of authority and responsibility.”

Anderson’s potential departure comes at a pivotal time for Virginia Republicans. Under his leadership, the party secured major wins, including Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s 2021 victory and gains in the General Assembly.

The possible leadership transition at RPV could impact the party’s strategy ahead of the 2025 gubernatorial race.

If Anderson were to step down, RPV First Vice Chair Kristy Way would assume the role on an interim basis. If he resigns on or after April 12, a special meeting would likely be called.

State Sen. Mark Peake announced his candidacy to succeed Anderson as RPV chair. He emphasized party unity, conservative principles and building on Anderson’s leadership ahead of the 2025 election.

Peake has secured endorsements from Youngkin, Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares, who praised his conservative leadership and commitment to continuing Anderson’s work.

As of now, the Democratic Party of Virginia has not publicly commented on Anderson’s nomination.
