(The Center Square) – President-elect Donald Trump on Monday sought to delay sentencing in his New York hush money case as he continues to appeal the guilty verdict.
In May 2024, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records for disguising hush money payments to an adult film actress as legal costs ahead of the 2016 election. Under New York state law, falsifying business records in the first degree is a Class E felony with a maximum sentence of four years in prison.
Last month, Judge Juan Merchan denied Trump’s motion to dismiss the indictment on grounds of presidential immunity because he said Trump’s actions in the case were unofficial and thus not protected by the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent immunity ruling.
Last week, Merchan set sentencing for Friday, Jan. 10, 10 days before his inauguration.
Trump’s attorneys on Monday filed a brief with the state’s appeals court seeking to delay the sentencing.
