Trump Seeks Major Defense Spending Increase Over Safety-Net Programs

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — The Trump administration is seeking a major increase in defense spending, requesting $1.5 trillion for fiscal year 2027, according to a report from The New York Times.

If approved, the request would mark the highest level of military spending in U.S. history.

“At one point, Mr. Trump indicated at a private lunch that military spending needed to be a national priority, even at the expense of federal safety-net programs and other government aid,” The Times reported.

The request comes as the war with Iran enters its fifth week.

On Friday, Iran shot down a U.S. fighter jet, escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.
