Trump to Sign Executive Order to Shut Down Education Department

President is expected to sign an executive order aimed at closing the Department of Education. The plan would shift control of education back to the states and is part of Trump’s broader goal to dismantle federal education oversight.

While it requires to formally shut down the department, the administration could make it nearly impossible for employees to do their jobs, similar to what has happened with other agencies.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has already cut the department’s staff significantly, calling it the first step toward closure. The president believes he can gain enough support from Congress to make it happen, but it’s unclear whether he has the votes.

A group of 21 Democratic attorneys general has filed a arguing Trump’s efforts to eliminate the department are illegal, since it was created by Congress and funded through federal law.

The department is one of the smallest federal agencies and plays a vital role in providing funds to and enforcing civil rights.
