TurboTax error means 12,000 Oregon taxpayers might save money if the refile

(The Center Square) – About 12,000 Oregon taxpayers who used TurboTax to prepare their 2023 federal and state tax returns may have a chance to reduce their tax liability or increase their refund by amending their state income tax return, according to the state’s Revenue Department.

Intuit, the company that made TurboTax, said its software program may not have picked the best deduction option for some taxpayers, causing potential overpayments to the state.

Intuit contacted the impacted taxpayers and offered instructions for filing an amended return for free.

Taxpayers must complete the amended return in TurboTax, print it out, and choose one of these three options to file their return, according to the release:

Mail their return to the Oregon Department of Revenue at P.O. Box 14700, Salem, OR, 97309-0930.Bring their printed amended return to one of the Department of Revenue offices. (Drop boxes are available to accept documents after regular business hours at the department’s offices located in Salem, Bend, Eugene, Medford, and Portland.)Enter the information from the printed return into Direct File Oregon to electronically file their amended return free of charge.

One can find the directions for using Direct File Oregon to file an amended state return on the Department of Revenue website.

Amended returns can take the state up to six months to process if they require manual review because of errors or missing information. Taxpayers impacted by this have three years from the date they filed their return or the due date of their return to file an amended return — whichever was later.

About 2.2 million people file state income tax returns in Oregon each year, according to the state’s Department of Revenue.
