UCLA sports teams traveled to banned states despite California law

(The Center Square) – The University of California at Los Angeles spent more than $150,000 for its sport teams to travel to states that a now-defunct law prohibited at the time.

Documents obtained by the right-leaning College Fix website show that sports teams traveled to Arizona, Alabama, Texas and Arkansas among other states where state-funded travel was banned due to laws on LGBTQ issues that California Democrats disagree with.

The travel was banned under a law signed by the previous Democratic governor, Jerry Brown. Current Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 447 which repealed the travel restrictions. Newsom’s office declined to comment to The College Fix.

“The repeal is convenient for UCLA, which is set to join the Big Ten Conference, home to four universities in states on the blacklist – Indiana University, Purdue University (Indiana), the University of Iowa, and The Ohio State University,” Matt Lamb, of The Fix, wrote.

The University claims that “department generated revenue, including from ticket sales, sponsorships, conference television distributions, etc” are not state funds and thus not covered by the old law.
