Virginia campaigns report millions before ballots cast

(The Center Square) – Virginians begin casting ballots Sept. 19, and new campaign finance filings highlight how much money candidates have on hand heading into the fall.

In the governor’s race, Democrat Abigail Spanberger raised over $14 million between July and August and reported $12.2 million cash on hand. Republican Winsome Earle-Sears raised $5.2 million in the same period and reported $4.9 million available.

For lieutenant governor, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi raised nearly $1.4 million and reported $2.2 million cash on hand. Republican John Reid brought in $374,000 and reported $317,000 available.

The attorney general race is closer. Republican incumbent Jason Miyares raised $3.8 million and reported $7.1 million cash on hand, with another $1.2 million in his PAC. Democrat Jay Jones raised $4 million and reported $3.7 million available.

House races are also drawing plenty of money. Speaker Don Scott leads all candidates with more than $4.1 million raised.

In the House District 22 race in Prince William County, Democrat Elizabeth Guzman reported $543,000 raised, compared with $286,000 for Republican Ian Lovejoy.

In House District 30, which includes parts of Loudoun and Fauquier counties, Democrat John McAuliff reported $203,000, while Republican Geary Higgins reported $136,000.

In House District 41, covering Montgomery and Roanoke counties, Democrat Lily Franklin raised $353,000, while Republican Chris Obenshain reported $242,000.

In House District 57, which spans Henrico and Goochland counties, Democrat May Nivar reported $415,000, compared with $266,000 for Republican David Owen.

In House District 64 in Stafford County, Democrat Stacey Carroll reported $195,000, while Republican Paul Milde reported $77,000.

The reports, compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project, cover contributions through Aug. 31. Early in-person voting for the Nov. 4 election begins Thursday.
