Watch live: Illinois lawmakers raise concerns over Chinese-linked EV battery plant getting tax credits

(The Center Square) – The Illinois Freedom Caucus is raising concerns over tax credits set to go to a Chinese-based electric vehicle battery manufacturer. They plan a news conference with members of the community at 5 p.m. Monday in Kankakee County, which can be viewed above or at this link.

Touting new jobs and a $2 billion investment from the company, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced the Gotion plant was setting up in Manteno during a groundbreaking ceremony last month. The deal includes more than $530 million in tax credits from Illinois. It’s estimated the project will get billions in incentives from the federal government.

Freedom Caucus members have already announced their concerns.

State Rep. Chris Miller, R-Oakland, said Illinois tax incentives should not go to people who “spy on our country, steal our technology, and intend to drive American companies out of business.”

“Pritzker’s giveaway borders on being traitorous,” Miller said.

Opposition to the planned facility in Illinois has also received pushback from members of the U.S. Congress.

A similar facility planned in Michigan has also received pushback.
