Whitmer introduces manufacturing challenge with equity mandates

(The Center Square) – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a statewide Battery and Advanced Manufacturing Challenge, which would provide $125 million in matching grants for battery and manufacturing projects across the state.

The funding comes from the Make it in Michigan Competitiveness Fund, part of this year’s omnibus spending bill.

“The new Battery and Advanced Manufacturing Challenge will help us secure our position as a clean energy and future mobility powerhouse,” Whitmer said.“With this challenge, our economic development toolkit, and our emerging ecosystem of advanced manufacturing, Michigan will keep competing and winning.”

Whitmer said grants are more likely to be given to climate-related projects in “disadvantaged communities,” as well as companies who provide competitive wages and support labor unions.

“The Battery and Advanced Manufacturing Challenge helps to ensure that as companies are scaling for the new economy, they are prioritizing their workers to create a holistic path forward that is mutually beneficial for their business, hardworking Michiganders and our economy,” Susan Corbin, director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economics said.

Businesses can apply for challenge funding on the Make it in Michigan Competition Fund website.
