Why Do We Have To Choose?

The well-known feud spanning half a decade between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B has gained media attention once again. After the announcement of Cardi’s performance at last night’s 2023 Video Music Awards, which Minaj hosted for the second year in a row, fans were convinced the event would lead to some interaction between the two. Made even worse by the fact that Megan Thee Stallion performed with Cardi B and allegedly fell out with Nicki in September of 2022.

Minaj took to the stage, donned in an all pink- bridal inspired gown, to introduce the first category. Her speech seemed to allude to the rumors about the feud. “MTV is petrified because they got a couple calls yesterday and people were saying, ‘What if Nicki says this and what if Nicki says that?’” The proclaimed Queen of Rap went on to say, “And I said, you know it’s OK, MTV, I can control myself…But you know who can’t control themselves? Roman. Red Ruby Da Sleeze, Chun-Li. So, I’ll think about it”

It’s no secret that the ongoing feud between some of our favorite female rappers has been heating up in recent years. Both the industry and the public have a bad habit of pitting women against each other and egging on social media disputes. The tweets since Missouri native Sexyy Red released her chart-topping song “Pound Town” have been less than favorable for her emerging counterparts.

Each rapper’s respective fanbase proves to be loyal to the end. But why is it impossible for more than one to shine at the same time? Maybe it’s unreasonable to think that everyone can get along, especially when no one pressures male rappers to sing kumbaya. Regardless of internet speculations and unconfirmed drama, the music seems to be the one thing everyone can agree on. That’s why I’ve put together a playlist of our favorite songs from our favorite rappers! Click below to listen.
