(The Center Square) – Wisconsin awarded $23.3 million combined to 53 projects for federally funded fast charging electric vehicle stations.

The charging stations will be built along what is being called the Wisconsin Alternative Fuel Corridor, part of $78 million in funds assigned to the state through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program requires charging stations to be built every 50 miles along the route.

The grants will go toward private industry construction of charging stations across Wisconsin, with 53 applications chosen out of 260 received in the first round of grants.

The total cost of the 53 projects is estimated at $33.8 million, meaning $10.5 million of private funding. The program required a 20% private funding match on projects.

Two Tribal Nations will receive more than $800,000 in funding and 13 selected sites will be installed in disadvantaged communities.

Oneida Casino in Green Bay will receive nearly $406,000 while the Potawatomi Fire Side Market in Crandon will receive nearly $410,000.

The 53 applicants include fuel retailers, hotels and restaurants including 24 Kwik Trip locations across the state.

The federal funds were authorized for grants in Wisconsin through a pair of electric vehicle bills approved in March.
