(The Center Square) – Wisconsin saw a 3.1% increase in sales tax collections year over year for April and overall tax and fee collections were down an adjusted 3.5% for the month year over year, according to new numbers released from the Department of Revenue.

Overall, sales tax collections are up 2.1% for the fiscal year compared to fiscal 2023.

Total fiscal year tax collections are up an adjusted 0.9% compared to a year before.

The totals were adjusted for comparison purposes because April 1 fell on a Monday, meaning taxes collected on the final days of March were recorded on April 1. A similar scenario occurred on May 1, 2023.

Sales tax collections are a direct indicator of consumer spending in the state while Wisconsin’s excise tax collections were down 17.1% year over year for April and are down 6.6% overall for the fiscal year.

Individual income taxes are up an adjusted 1.2% for the fiscal year.
