Women Veterans Recognition Day proposed

(The Center Square) – Women Veterans Recognition Day was proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a congresswoman from one of North Carolina’s most liberal districts.

Rep. Valerie Foushee, D-N.C., proposes June 12 for the date “to honor the extraordinary women veterans throughout American history who have answered the call to serve with unmatched bravery, resilience and leadership.”

The date was chosen because it coincides with the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act.

Foushee cited “trailblazing women” to include Army Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody; Mary Edwards Walker; Loretta Perfectus Walsh; Lt. Elsie S. Ott; Jeannie Marie Leavitt; Capt. Kathleen McGrath; Col. Linda McTague; Simone Askew; and the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.

Foushee voted no on House Resolution 28, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025. She’s advocated for the Women’s Health Protection Act, the Right to Contraception Act, and the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act – all abortion enabling legislation proposals.

Foushee’s 4th Congressional District includes Orange and Durham counties, and parts of Chatham and Wake.
