Wyoming SOS Gray welcomes SCOTUS ruling that allows Trump on Colorado’s ballot

(The Center Square) – Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray praised the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Monday in a case involving former President Donald Trump’s access to Colorado’s Republican primary election ballot.

“I am extremely pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision reversing the Colorado Supreme Court’s repugnant ruling,” Gray, who filed an amicus brief in the case, said in a statement.

The 9-0 ruling reversed a decision from the Colorado Supreme Court that said Trump could be disqualified from the ballot under the 14th Amendment because of his role in Jan. 6, 2021.

“Because the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the States, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates, we reverse,” the ruling states.

Gray’s amicus brief argued Trump did not engage in insurrection or rebellion in challenging the 2020 election results.

“Today’s unanimous decision keeping Trump on the ballot marks vindication for the truth and for liberty,” Gray said. “As Secretary of State, I will continue to fight to ensure the People of Wyoming can choose who to elect for themselves.”

Colorado’s primary election is on Tuesday. Trump’s name was included in the state’s Republican primary ballot after he appealed the Colorado Supreme Court ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. Had the U.S. Supreme Court deemed Trump ineligible for the ballot, all votes cast for him in the state’s primary would have been invalid.
