(The Center Square) – Attorney General Dave Yost wants Congress to allow every state to join Ohio with year-round access to an ethanol-gasoline fuel blend.
Yost, along with 15 other state attorneys general, sent a letter to Congress urging a plan they say will help jump-start United States energy production by expanding access to E15 gasoline.
Most states are only allowed access to E15 – a blend with 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline – during nonsummer months. During the other times, those states can use E10 gas. Eight states, including Ohio, can use E15 throughout the year.
Yost says a change will help motorists and Ohio farmers.
“Ohio’s motorists, farmers and energy providers all stand to gain from this proposal,” Yost said. “It’s good for our state’s economy, and it’s a key step toward energy independence for our country.”
The attorneys general are pushing the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act of 2025 that would eliminate the disparity and challenges faced by oil producers who have to supply two times of fuel instead of one.
“On the energy-producer and liquid fuels front, everyone can row in the same direction: Year-round E15 creates certainty that allows for planning and strategic growth,” the letter says.
American cars built after 2001 can run on E15, and both fuel blends similarly impact the environment, according to the letter.
E10 has 5% less ethanol, a renewable fuel made from plant materials. The letter adds that E15 gas is cheaper than E10.
Attorneys general in Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia are also calling for the change.
