Ideally, such a place would offer important amenities such as easy access to physical activities, quality health care, and social venues. Based on an index of 11 key measures – including health outcomes, the concentration of medical service providers, air quality, and venues for physical activity and entertainment – Dukes County ranks as the best place to retire in Massachusetts. Home to the unincorporated community of Edgartown, Dukes County has a population of 20,277 people, 24.0% of whom are retirement age.
One reason the county stands out among other parts of the state is the relative growth in the retirement-age population in recent years. The number of people aged 65 and up as a share of the total population climbed by 2.8 percentage points in the county between 2017 and 2021, while over the same period, the share of the state’s population who are retirement-age increased by a relatively modest 1.1 percentage points.
