New York is holding elections, including for judicial and municipal offices, on June 27, 2023, and Nov. 7, 2023, respectively. A number of candidates running in these elections completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Marva Brown (Democratic Party, Working Families Party) is running for New York City Civil Court Kings County and the general election is on Nov. 7. Here’s how Brown responded to the question: Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
“Marva Brown is a career public defender running for Kings County Civil Court. A seasoned litigator Marva has prepared herself for the bench by taking Continuing Litigation Education courses in an array of civil areas. Active in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, Marva is a member of Brooklyn Community Board 8 where she sits on the Public Safety, Parks, and Youth and Education committees. Marva is also the President of the Friends of Brower Park and sits on the Boards of Families and Friends of the Wrongfully Convicted and Soul2Soulz.”

Susan Lee (D) is running for New York City Council District 1 and the Democratic primary is on June 27. Here’s how Lee responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
“I am very passionate about green spaces. We need to continually invest in and fight for our green spaces … Parks are especially essential in densely populated urban areas where they are extensions of our home. … I am the founding board member of SDR Park Alliance. I am thrilled that our organization was awarded $3.3 million from Governor Hochul’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative Award. This significant investment will allow us to renovate Sara D. Roosevelt Park, creating a green sanctuary for use by a multicultural and multigenerational neighborhood.”

Sukhi Singh (D) is running for New York City Council District 29 and the Democratic primary is on June 27. Here’s how Singh responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
“1- Vote “NO” to ANY city budget that cuts funding for education
2- Commit to creating safer streets for all local communities by funding educational programs to tackle hate crimes & violence
3- Expand rent stabilization laws & protections while cutting redtape for existing units to create more housing opportunities
4- Ensure full language access in all city agencies and government forms in all languages spoken in District 29
5- Support QueensLink to increase transit accessibility for central & southeastern Queens”
