Op-Ed: Illegal immigration and voting

“Just because someone is here illegally doesn’t mean they broke any of our laws.” – Nancy Pelosi

During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, our founders braved the waters of discontent with proposals on the type and size of government to unite the 13 independent colonies without usurping their rights. Once they agreed a republic insured every citizen would have an equal voice in governing, they designated the powers and the role of the “citizens” so they could self-govern.

Since our founders were patriots, they assumed all American citizens would collectively share in governing of this nation: “A government of the people and for the people.” Our framers were very specific on who was in charge of our government: Only citizens would choose who would govern since “the right to vote was the right to govern.” They made no provisions for the political class.

The U.S. Constitution enshrined our duty to promote justice, peace, and equality. Throughout the decades of war and conflict, Americans have fought tenaciously to preserve our national spirit with “each citizen” participating in the process of forging our country’s unique identity as a free nation.

For years, America opened the gates of our harbors to displaced refugees after the two great wars. America has granted asylum to those who did not feel safe in their nations. America has welcomed more immigrants from around the globe than any other nation. She has been generous to a fault.

“Only in America can someone start with nothing and achieve the American Dream.” – Rafael Cruz

For years, immigrants assimilated into mainstream American society and helped each other study for their citizenship test. After passing that test, the first thing they did was register to vote. Voting was a badge of honor for them that married them to this country as valuable U.S. citizens for life.

Sadly in the last decade, the quality and character of many immigrants has changed. This breed of immigrants, mostly from central America, have come to the U.S. to take advantage of our welfare system. A global recession, political chaos, antiquated U.S. border policies and Democrats failing to secure our borders has brought the wrong kind of immigrants to America. They are a liability for America, not an asset.

“A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.” – Ronald Reagan

Although attempted registration by non-citizens is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000, the Biden-Harris administration flooded the U.S. states with illegal migrants, many believe to increase the Democratic vote.

“The winning candidate doesn’t care who voted for him.” – Jesse Ventura

Americans are shocked when they learn no state in the nation requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. A number of states like Arizona tried to enact that requirement, but each one was blocked by the federal courts.

It’s shocking to look at the federal voter-registration form. It says you can submit almost anything as an ID to register to vote: a Social Security card or a driver’s license number, even a utility bill. None of these prove you’re a citizen. Fake IDs like Social Security cards and driver’s licenses are a dime a dozen and can be purchased on any street corner on the black market for next to nothing.

A recent study by Just Facts Institute revealed that about 10% to 27% of illegal aliens living in the U.S. are registered to vote. This could result in up to 2.7 million illegal votes cast in the November elections. They have the potential to alter election results in swing states and every close race.

The 2022 U.S. census recorded over 19 million adult illegal aliens in our country. They estimate up to 5 million are illegally registered to vote. These figures are high enough to overturn the will of the people in any state or federal election. In California, home to the largest number of illegal aliens in the U.S., they just passed a bill that allows voting without having to present any formal ID at all.

“Illegal immigration is praised only by those who benefit directly from it.” – Victor Davis Hanson

When the left is criticized for their registration tactics, they point to the 2002 Help America Vote Act, which requires states to verify the applicant’s identity with their local DMV. If they don’t have a state ID or license the law states they must verify the last “four digits” of a voter’s Social Security number with the Social Security Administration. “But this only verifies their identity and not their citizenship.”

The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 ordered states to register voters at the Department of Motor Vehicles and agencies where they apply for welfare benefits. Those offices are required by law to hand over voter registration forms and application papers. If an applicant claims they are a U.S. citizen and has a form of ID that is considered “valid by the clerk,” they are registered to vote.

Hans Von Spakovsky of the Public Interest Legal Foundation remarked during a recent edition of Washington Watch that the problem is, the states aren’t doing their job to verify citizenship. So it’s extremely easy for someone who is not a citizen to register to vote and then vote in every election.

Von Spakovsky added, “It doesn’t matter whether they’re Black or white, Asian or Hispanic or which political party they support. Every time an alien illegally votes, that alien is voiding and negating the vote of a U.S. citizen, no matter which political party they support.” And Democrats just ignore that.

Earlier this month, House Republicans attempted to address this issue by introducing a bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and would remove illegal migrants from existing voter rolls. But Democrats are lobbying heavily against it, claiming it will disenfranchise minority voters. If it passes in the House, it will die in the Senate, especially if there is a tie vote since Harris will kill it.

Ryan Walker of Heritage Action said, “It’s undeniable the current structure makes it possible for illegal immigrants to vote. The American people don’t know how widespread the problem is.”

The Biden-Harris administration has welcomed millions of illegal migrants through our borders, including sophisticated criminal syndicates and foreign adversaries and now leftist groups are helping them register to vote. It is incumbent upon Congress to implement greater enforcement measures that secure the voter registration process and ensure only American citizens vote in every election.

U.S. Code § 611 clearly states: “Voting by aliens shall be unlawful for aliens to vote in any election held solely for the purpose of electing a candidate for the office of President, Vice President, and Presidential electors, Members of the Senate, and Members of the House of Representatives.”

Allowing even the chance for illegal aliens to vote in an election could sway an entire race. Its time we remind our Congressmen and women about U.S. Code § 611 before next election.

”American elections are for American citizens, and we intend to keep it that way.” – Bryan Steil R- Wisconsin
