(The Center Square) – As of late Tuesday night, the race for Virginia’s 5th congressional district Republican primary between incumbent and U.S. House Freedom Caucus chair Rep. Bob Good and state Sen. John McGuire was too close to call.
McGuire led by less than 1%, with all 24 localities reporting, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. However, results can be recounted in Virginia if the final tally differs by 1% or less and the loser requests.
Former President Donald Trump gave McGuire a leg up by offering his official endorsement on May 28 and aiding him in his race. Good had endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis early on in the Republican primary and only more recently endorsed Trump.
Good released a statement as the last early votes were being counted, thanking constituents for their support.
“The entire DC Swamp was aligned against us with over $10 million in attack ads, but with your help we were able to make this race too close to call,” Good wrote on X.
“No matter the outcome, you’ve shown the DC Swamp that you won’t back down from standing for what’s right. Keep the faith and don’t stop fighting now.”
He mentioned that mail-in and provisional ballots will continue to trickle in and have yet to be counted.
McGuire had yet to issue a statement by the time of publication.
