Illinois quick hits: Flags to fly half-staff to honor Edgar; thousands attend Kirk vigils

Flags to fly half-staff to honor Edgar

Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar has died at the age of 79, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Edgar was governor from 1991 to 1999 after previously serving as Illinois secretary of state for ten years.

Current Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he would direct flags across Illinois to half-staff in honor of Edgar’s legacy.

Thousands of people attended vigils across Illinois to honor Charlie Kirk over the weekend, including at an outdoor event in the conservative icon’s birthplace of Arlington Heights.

Kirk was fatally shot last Wednesday at Utah Valley University.

A funeral service for Kirk is scheduled for Sept. 21 in Arizona.

Carjacker sentenced to 22 years

A federal judge has sentenced a man to 22 years in prison for carjacking three vehicles at gunpoint in Chicago and shooting one of the victims in the leg.

Prosecutors say Jamari Edwards, 22, of Chicago carjacked the vehicles on the city’s South Side in 2022.
