Illinois quick hits: Pritzker launching reelection campaign; hearings for three readings lawsuits

Pritzker launching reelection campaign

Gov. J.B. Pritzker is kicking off his reelection campaign with a rally in Chicago Thursday morning.

The governor will follow that appearance with stops in Rockford, Peoria and Springfield.

Pritzker was first elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022.

Hearings for three readings lawsuits

Separate lawsuits challenging how Illinois Statehouse Democrats allegedly abuse the constitution’s three readings rule for bills to become law have hearings in the days ahead.

Statehouse Republican leaders have a lawsuit challenging the passage of a measure they say will make Illinois a more litigious state. That case has a petition hearing Friday morning.

The Freedom Caucus lawsuit against the budget has a hearing Tuesday.

Both cases are in Sangamon County Circuit Court.

Cook County down payment assistance

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has announced the second phase of a down payment assistance program.

Earlier this month, county commissioners approved $8.5 million in county taxpayer funds to provide subsidies equal to 5% of a home’s price, up to $25,000.

The assistance is provided as a forgivable second loan over a five-year term.
