(The Center Square) – President-elect Donald Trump beat Vice President Harris in Michigan, leading 49.5% to 48.5% when the Associated called the race for Trump at 12:54 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday.
Michigan voted for Trump in 2016 by a margin of roughly 10,000 votes, the first time a Republican presidential candidate had won the state in almost three decades. But Michigan voted for current President Joe Biden in 2020. Michigan has 15 electoral votes.
Republicans across the state are celebrating the win.
“President Trump always believed the people of Michigan were ready to Make America Great again and it was an honor to work shoulder to shoulder with him and THOUSANDS of volunteers to turn our state red!,” the Michigan GOP posted on X after the results were released.
Trump has now won five out of the seven swing states, capturing Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina,and Georgia along with Michigan as of 2 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday. The AP has already named Trump the president-elect with 292 electoral college votes, compared to Harris’ 224.
Roughly 22,000 new voters registered on Election Day and more than 2 million Michiganders voted in person on Election Day. More than 5.5 Michiganders in total voted in the 2024 election, roughly equivalent to record-breaking 2020 numbers.
