Trump leads Biden in Nevada, other key states: Poll

(The Center Square) – President Joe Biden trails his Republican challenger, former President Donald Trump, in Nevada, according to new polling from The New York Times and Siena College.

When asked to choose between the two candidates today, 50% of registered voters in the state chose Trump, and 38% chose Biden. Trump also leads Biden in the other battleground states of Michigan, Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania, the poll found.

Trump is also beating Biden 40% to 28% in Clark County, 39% to 30% in Washoe County, and 53% to 20% in rural areas. In terms of race/ethnicity, Trump is leading Biden among White, Hispanic, and ‘Other’ voters with Trump’s 47%, 37%, and 31%, respectively, compared to Biden’s 30%, 26%, 22%, respectively.

Meanwhile, it’s not just rural middle-aged white males in Nevada supporting Trump. Pollsters found Trump with 31% of 18- to 29-year-old voters, 39% of voters aged 30 to 44, and 54% of 45-to 64-year-old voters. The only age range that Biden is beating Trump is in voters 65+.

The poll indicates that the economy is the biggest issue for Nevada voters. Twenty-two percent say the economy is number one for them in this election, and 56% of voters rate the economy as “poor.” When asked whether they trust Biden or Trump to do a better job on the economy, Trump leads Biden 61% to Biden’s 32%.

“It is concerning to me when I keep seeing press come out of the White House where they keep saying the economy is good,” Jacob Sprague, 32, of Reno told The New York Times. “That’s weird because I’m paying more on taxes and more on groceries and more on housing and more on fuel. So that doesn’t feel good.”

The poll also found 40% of Nevada voters favor Democratic U.S. Sen. Jacky Rosen compared to 38% for Republican challenger Sam Brown, and 23% of voters who say they don’t know or refused to answer.

The poll was conducted from April 28 to May 9, 2024, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 points.
