Virginia GOP chairman congratulates McGuire on being Republican nominee

(The Center Square) – The Republican Party of Virginia is congratulating state Sen. John McGuire on being the “Republican nominee” for the 5th Congressional District while incumbent U.S. Rep. Bob Good vows to challenge the results.

In another blow to Good’s campaign, Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Rich Anderson released a statement congratulating McGuire, saying the race has “concluded.” McGuire drew the endorsement of former President Donald Trump; Good in January became chairman of the Freedom Caucus within the House of Representatives.

“The 5th Congressional District Republican Primary Election has now concluded, and I congratulate state Senator John McGuire on being the Republican nominee. Further, I thank Congressman Bob Good for his service to the commonwealth and country,” stated Anderson.

Anderson said he respects Good’s “right” to request a recount, acknowledging the razor-thin margin, which currently stands at 5.4% in favor of McGuire.

“Given the margin, Congressman Good has the right – after the State Board of Elections certifies this result on July 2nd – to request a recount of the election. As Americans, we should respect his right to do so,” said the chairman.

Anderson expressed confidence in the election process, seemingly disregarding Good’s latest claims of election impropriety, specifically in Albemarle and Hanover counties and the city of Lynchburg.

“As this process and the general election move forward, we can all have confidence that the commonsense appointments to the Virginia Department of Elections and State Board of Elections over the last three years, along with Virginia’s exclusive use of paper ballots, will keep our elections secure,” Anderson affirmed.

The chairman touted voter reforms put in place by Gov. Glenn Youngkin in an effort to “safeguard” the election process.

“The major reforms put in place by Governor Youngkin will ensure that Virginia elections are safe, secure, and reliable – and they have included such safeguards as expanding data sharing agreements with other states, streamlining and speeding the process of removing deceased voters from the rolls,” Anderson argued.

The chairman ended his statement by looking forward to the November general elections.

“I and the Republican Party of Virginia are confident that our candidates and commonwealth are on a sound glidepath to victory on November 5th,” Anderson concluded.

The race has yet to be called by major news outlets or the Virginia Department of Elections.
