(The Center Square) – Independent congressional candidate Mike Klein hopes to unseat Incumbent Republican Congresswoman Kat Cammack in Florida’s 3rd District.
Klein officially announced his run on Independence Day and is currently the only independent candidate in the race.
“Life is not affordable for normal people anymore – gas, food, housing, healthcare, insurance and childcare. None of this is an accident and as a nation it is unbearable. Something has to change before our 250 year experiment collapses,” said Klein. “Only an Independent Congressman can lead reform in a House divided, where manufactured partisan infighting prevents badly needed system reform from happening.”
Cammack is in her third term and has served in Congress since 2021. She received 61.6% of the vote when she ran for reelection in 2024, defeating Democratic candidate Tom Wells who received 38.4% of the vote.
The North Central Florida district stretches from the Florida-Georgia line to Ocala and includes Gainesville, Lake City and Suwannee. The district tends to lean heavily Republican.
Cammack currently sits on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Agriculture. She also serves on fifteen caucuses where she co-chairs four of them and chairs the Republican Women’s Caucus.
The House Committee on Energy and Commerce has jurisdiction over issues including energy production, health care programs, telecommunications and consumer protection. The House Committee on Agriculture oversees farm programs, nutrition assistance and rural development.
President Donald Trump endorsed her run with Cammack responding, “Thank you for your continued support, Mr. President and so proud to serve alongside you. Our mission is simple: put America first, fight for our communities, and deliver real results.”
There are four Democrats vying for the seat. Tom Wells is running again along with Troy Albers, Seth Harp, and George Hubac. The Democratic primary will be held on August 18 to determine who will be on the ballot in November’s general election.
