Georgia gas prices up 31 cents from last month

(The Center Square) – A gallon of regular unleaded gas in Georgia is $3.92, 15 cents higher than last week and 31 cents higher than last month, according to AAA.

A quiet weekend in Iran led to a slight decrease, but prices still remained in the $80-per-barrel range, down from around $90 a barrel, according to Bloomberg.

“What drivers pay at the pump is still closely tied to crude oil prices,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “As uncertainty in global energy markets persists, drivers should be prepared for continued price fluctuations and the possibility of higher pump prices in the weeks ahead.”

Among Georgia’s neighboring states, Tennessee had the lowest gas price at $3.70 per gallon, followed by South Carolina at $3.76 per gallon. Florida was the most expensive of the surrounding states at $3.96 per gallon, followed by North Carolina at $3.80 per gallon. Alabama’s fuel cost is $3.78 a gallon.

The national average price is $4.11 a gallon. California is the costliest at $5.65 a gallon.

Gas is the cheapest in Indiana at $3.49 per gallon. Gov. Mike Braun suspended fuel taxes at least until the end of July, according to a release from Braun’s office. The state’s fuel tax for August will add about 21 cents per gallon to the price, according to the Indiana Department of Revenue.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp extended a month-long gas tax suspension for two weeks in May for the Memorial Day holiday but the tax break is no longer in effect.

Georgia’s fuel tax adds about 33 cents to gasoline and 37 cents to diesel fuel, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue. The money funds statewide transportation projects.
