(The Center Square) – Gas prices in Georgia are two cents less than a week ago, according to AAA.
The cost for a regular unleaded gallon of gas is $2.91 two days before the new year, but don’t expect the lower price to last.
“Crude oil remains low, and demand has tapered off somewhat now that Christmas has passed, which helped gas prices drop a little,” said Montrae Waiters, AAA spokeswoman. “However, Georgia drivers are expected to travel in record numbers leading up to the New Year, spanning from Saturday, December 21 to Wednesday, January 1. Therefore, we could see a little hike in the prices at the pumps as we get closer to New Year’s Eve.”
Georgia motorists are paying a dime per gallon less at the pump than last year, AAA said. The national average is $3.02 a gallon.
The least expensive gas is found at the Tennessee border in Catoosa, Dade and Walker counties at $2.70 a gallon. Drivers filling up in Atlanta or Savannah will pay the most, $2.93, according to AAA.
This week will wrap up a busy travel season that could break records. AAA predicted that 3.7 million Georgians would travel more than 50 miles from their home during the holiday period.
While most of those travelers would likely drive, Hartsville Jackson International Airport was also predicted to be busy. Airport officials said about more than 3 million travelers would make a stop there before Sunday, Jan. 5.
