(The Center Square) — The federal government is sending more than $6.1 million in taxpayer money to four South Carolina airports as part of grants for rehabilitation and construction projects.
The latest in federal tax money is from the 2024 Airport Improvement Program’s third round of grants. The latest tranche of funding includes more than $374 million the Federal Aviation Administration announced for airfield and safety projects at 299 airports in 46 states and American Samoa.
The largest award announced for South Carolina airports goes to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in Greer. According to FAA information, the airport will receive nearly $5.6 million to construct an apron.
According to an announcement, Florence Regional Airport will receive the second-largest award. The airport in Florence will receive $340,525 in federal tax money to rehabilitate a runway and a taxiway.
Additionally, Laurens County Airport in Laurens will receive $91,393 to construct a terminal, and Sumter Airport in Sumter will receive $91,393 to reconstruct an apron.
Palmetto State airports did not receive funding in the first two rounds of 2024 funding, announced in June. Airports receiving grants could not immediately be reached for comment.
“These grants will help support our nation’s airports as they make improvements to enhance safety, efficiency and the needs of travelers for a better experience,” FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta R. Griffin said in an announcement.
