Shriners opening new research center in Atlanta

(The Center Square) – Shriners Children’s Healthcare is bringing a new research center to Atlanta, which will bring 470 new jobs to the city, Gov. Brian Kemp said Wednesday.

The research center will be located in Science Square, a mixed-use facility near the Georgia Tech campus. Kemp said it is a $153 million investment.

“The Shriners Children’s Research Institute will serve as a multidisciplinary innovation hub to advance the health care of children,” said Dr. Marc Lalande, Shriners Children’s Vice President of Research Programs, in a release from Kemp’s office. “The close partnership with the outstanding biomedical engineers and scientists from Georgia Tech and Emory University will accelerate discovery and spearhead new treatments and therapies.”

Shriners Healthcare treats children with orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions, burn injuries, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and cleft lip/palate. Patients from all 50 states and 128 countries were served by Shriners last year, the organization said.

The research conducted at the Atlanta location will include cell and gene therapies, robotics, artificial intelligence, medical devices, biologics, and data informatics.

“Shriners Children’s is an incredible addition to Georgia’s growing nonprofit, R&D, and life sciences communities,” Kemp said. “Our commitment to being the Top State for Talent attracts outstanding organizations and partners like this that further life-changing research at our top-ranked research universities across the state.”
