Budget amendments considered by Shreveport City Council

(The Center Square) – The Shreveport City Council agenda on Tuesday was packed with budget amendments, one of which pertained to new police cars for the Shreveport Police Department.

The city is reviewing all 2025 revenues and expenses as part of the 2026 budget process, prompting a large number of budget amendment ordinances.

If the $1.4 million ordinance introduced during the council’s regular session passes Sept. 23, the ordinance will amend the General Fund budget to appropriate nearly $1.5 million for replacement police vehicles.

Other budget amendments introduced included an ordinance to amend the Water and Sewer Enterprise Fund to account for estimated revenues and expenses, adding $2.3 million in interest earnings. The funds would be used to pay for the installation of AMI water meters this year.

AMI is an acronym for Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

An ordinance potentially amending the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund was also introduced, which adds $600,000 in landfill revenues. The funds would go toward paying the landfill contractor.

The Retained Risk Budget also needs amending after being reviewed – Ordinance 94 adds $3 million to the fund, consisting of $698,000 in insurance recoveries revenue, $428,000 from Airports Fund revenue and $1,874,000 in General Fund revenue. This ordinance accompanies two others amending the Airports Fund and the General Fund. The funds will pay claims payments, according to the ordinance.

The General Fund is also potentially being amended to receive additional funding for rate stabilization. This amendment will increase the Rate Stabilization Account by $5 million from a transfer from the Water and Sewer Fund.
