(The Center Square) – After the Sept. 2 juvenile detention numbers showed a slight increase, the parish is continuing to monitor juvenile stats as school is underway.
Caddo Parish Chief Administrative Officer Erica Bryant updated the Caddo Parish Commission during this week’s work session. According to her report, there are 18 juveniles in detention, one 17-year-old, 16 in the Caddo Correctional Center, seven with the Office of Juvenile Justice and 423 on probation.
Caddo commissioner John-Paul Young questioned the Caddo Correctional capacity numbers as of now. Bryant said it is still hovering around the 1,500 mark – maximum capacity for the center.
Compared to previous stats, Bryant’s report showed a good decrease in both detention numbers and correctional center numbers. At the beginning of September, there were 22 juveniles in detention, five with the Office of Juvenile Justice, four 17-year-olds, 20 juveniles at the Caddo correctional center and 422 on probation.
While there is one more probation case, other areas are dropping, even as the school semester continues, which some have noted are the highest intake times for juvenile crimes.
When looking at the capacity of the Caddo Correctional Center, the center can hold 1,500. Back in June, Bryant reported that the correctional center had 1,493, with 1,158 of those being pretrial detainees. And, in May, there were 1,499. Throughout the past few months, the center has been close to 1,500.
“There is a constant communication about how to get some of those folks out of the facility,” said Bryant previously during the May work session. “It is our plan that the money can only go so far. There has to be some adjustments to that facility.”
Overall, juvenile crime is decreasing based on past reports. While probation cases and detention numbers fluctuate every few weeks sometimes showing increases, numbers continue to hold lower.
