(The Center Square) — Caddo Parish Administrator Erica Bryant shared census data for Caddo’s Juvenile Detention Center and the Caddo Correctional Center, showing an overall decrease in numbers from the last work session.
The Juvenile Detention Center report showed 17 in detention, five with the Office of Juvenile Justice, 26 in the Caddo Correctional Center and 452 probation cases. This is a decrease since the May 19 report in detention numbers, probation cases and those in the correctional center.
Reports from the last work session showed an increase in juveniles in detention. Officials say this is not unusual as school ends and summer begins in the parish. As of May 19, there were 21 juveniles in detention, none of whom were 17-year-olds, 461 probation cases and 29 at the Caddo Correctional Center; 21 of those were 17-year-olds.
The total reported population at the Caddo Correctional Center is 1,493, and 1,158 of those are pre-trial detainees, which is a decrease from early May, when the Caddo Correctional Center was almost at capacity.
Previously, Commissioner John-Paul Young asked Bryant for the population back in the May 5 work session, and the correctional center had 1,499. The center can hold 1,500, meaning only one spot was vacant at the time of the report.
Juvenile Services Director Andrew Randall Jr. spoke with The Center Square previously about the distinction between numbers heard in the administration report.
“Our Juvenile Detention Center is a pre-adjudication facility, meaning they are here with us an average of 10 to 14 days prior to being adjudicated,” said Randall. The JDC can hold up to 24 youths.
Bryant told the commission previously that the 1,500 prisoners and more waiting to enter the jail is not sustainable.
“There is constant communication about how to get some of those folks out of the facility,” said Bryant about the 1,499 in May. “It is our plan that the money can only go so far. There has to be some adjustments to that facility.”
