Feds announce disaster declaration in Louisiana for Hurricane Francine

(The Center Square) — The White House declared this week that a major disaster exists in Louisiana after Hurricane Francine and ordered federal aid to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by the storm.

President Joe Biden’s declaration makes federal funding available to the parishes of Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary and Terrebonne.

Gov. Jeff Landry responded on X to the announcement Tuesday morning stating, “This federal assistance is vital to help Louisiana rebuild in the aftermath of #HurricaneFrancine. I appreciate the hard work our federal delegation, local officials, and our administration put in to get this over the finish line.”

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Francine made landfall in Terrebonne Parish as a Category 2 storm with winds of 100 mph. The storm brought between six to eight inches of rain to the New Orleans metro area, causing flash flooding. It also knocked out power for 388,000 ratepayers in Louisiana, 52,000 in Mississippi and 10,000 in Alabama.
