Increased police presence expected in Shreveport starting this month

(The Center Square) — The Shreveport Police Department updated the city on two new substations under way to help reduce crime and increase police presence throughout Shreveport.

In a recent report, Cpl. Chris Bordelon said the West Shreveport Police Substation located on Monkhouse Drive is nearing completion. The newest substation will open this month as the department continues its efforts to decrease crime in the area.

The Center Square spoke with Bordelon about the upcoming substations and what they’ll offer to the community.

“The impact of these new substations will be immediate — placing officers directly within the communities they serve will reduce response times, increase visibility, and provide a much-needed economic boost to those areas,” Bordelon told The Center Square. “As crime continues to decline across the city, we believe the decentralization of police services is playing a major role in that positive trend.”

Recently, the department announced potential locations for a South Shreveport substation. Cedar Grove Park is the official location, and construction will begin in the coming months. Construction is also underway for the North Shreveport permanent substation in North Market.

“Our goal is to have all three substations completed by the first quarter of 2026, at which point we will begin a major overhaul of our central police headquarters at 1234 Texas Avenue,” said Bordelon.

The new facilities will offer Shreveport residents and visitor ‘Safety Exchange Zones’ where people can make online transaction exchanges or custody related exchanges in a safe, visible environment.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux gave a statement during ‘A Moment with the Mayor’ about the new substations and how they will impact the city.

“These new police facilities will give our officers the modern tools and resources they need and strengthen our community presence and response in both neighborhoods,” said Arceneaux.

Police Chief Wayne Smith gave an update on the substations back in May during the Public Safety Committee meeting. He expressed his excitement for the newest South Shreveport substation at Cedar Grove Park.

“This is more than just a shift in operations — it’s a commitment to stronger community engagement, improved safety, and a better Shreveport for all,” said Bordelon.
