Monkhouse police substation opens in west Shreveport

(The Center Square) — A ribbon cutting for the new Monkhouse Police Substation was held over the weekend, marking a milestone moment in the district, according to Shreveport Councilmember James Green.

The Shreveport Police Department is constructing three new substations in several neighborhoods citywide as it seeks to enhance coverage in many areas. Over the weekend, one of the three officially opened in West Shreveport.

“This is a major event for District F and the entire city,” said Green in a news release. “F stands for First and Forward. It reflects both our commitment to lead and our determination to keep moving in a positive direction. I want to thank all those involved for their partnership and continued dedication to the people we serve.”

In total, the three substations will cost approximately $6 million, which will be funded by interest earnings on 2021 bonds. The department aims to have all three substations completed and opened by the first quarter of 2026.

“The impact of these new substations will be immediate — placing officers directly within the communities they serve will reduce response times, increase visibility, and provide a much-needed economic boost to those areas. As crime continues to decline across the city, we believe the decentralization of police services is playing a major role in that positive trend,” SPD Cpl. Chris Bordelon told The Center Square previously.

According to a news release, Green feels the opening of the substation will help build trust, enhance safety, and empower the people in District F. Members of the community can use the substation as a safe meeting place for custody exchanges, filing reports, and community events.

“As we open these doors, we open a new chapter for this district,” Green said. “District F deserves the best, and this substation is just the beginning of what’s to come.”
