Shreveport City Council approves city funding for Mardi Gras parades

(The Center Square) — Four resolutions were passed in this week’s Shreveport City Council meeting that provide city funding for Mardi Gras parades and the organizations involved.

Resolution 17 passed on Tuesday authorizes a three-year contract between Shreveport and the African-American Celebration Corporation. This resolution, according to the contract, is estimated to cost $29,345. The cost includes the $9,745 needed for equipment and $19,600 needed for staffing.

Resolution 18 authorizes a three-year contract between Shreveport and the Krewe of Harambee. This resolution notes the city will provide $3,900 to the Krewe of Harambee to aid in the presentation of the yearly parade for the duration of the contract.

The city has also agreed to provide payment for police services, emergency medical services, provide cleanup crews, provide and compensate security for the event and other stipulations outlined in the contract.

The council passed Resolutions 19 and 20 during the council meeting as well. Resolution 19 authorizes a three-year contract between Shreveport and the Krewe of Highland Mardi Gras parades.

In this resolution, the city agrees to pay $22,600 to the Krewe of Highland to produce their parade. The city also agreed to pay for additional services like police and medical, assist in street closures, and provide equipment needed.

Resolution 20 authorizes a three-year contract between Shreveport and the Krewe of Sobek. In this agreement, the city will pay the Krewe of Sobek $3,000 to produce their parade.
