Shreveport City Council postpones revamp of city zoning map

(The Center Square) — The Shreveport City Council held its monthly meeting this week to discuss resolutions and ordinances.

The longest conversation on Tuesday evening involved a zoning ordinance to amend the official zoning map of the city. The amendment would rezone the property located on the southeast corner of Line Avenue and Jordan Street from an urban corridor zoning district to an institutional campus zoning district.

The representative of the Cedar Health Group is hoping to get permission to build a new rehab facility there to help patients transition to sobriety.

The committee members however were worried if they pass this ordinance they won’t have as much say on what gets built there. Residents in the area told several members they want to ask more questions before the board approves this.

The Council also advised that they amend the ordinance to require security because of the location and how many unhoused individuals may seek refuge there without permission first.

The council voted 5-2 to postpone the zoning change.

There were other noteworthy resolutions that achieved final passage. One authorizes the mayor to sign an approval of the assignment by Cypress Energy Partners, LLC of three oil and gas leases to Paloma Natural Gas, LLC.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux was also authorized to enter into an agreement with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development obligating the city to pay 10% of the construction cost, assume all legal liability for, and all maintenance and operating costs of the subject lighting system on Interstate 20 from Sam R. Fertitta Drive to the Red River.

Two other similar agreements were authorized: one of the subject lighting system at Interstate 49’s Southern Loop Interchange and the other of the subject lighting system for Interstate 20 at Greenwood Road/U.S. 80 and Lakeshore Drive interchanges.

All of these passed with unanimous votes.
