Shreveport financials show $97.1M in sales and use tax collected year-to-date

(The Center Square) – The Shreveport City Council released the monthly financial report, which showed the city brought in $14 million in sales and use tax for July.

Overall, the city has collected $97.1 million from sales and use tax in Shreveport this year.

Last year, the city collected $93.9 million year-to-date and $12.9 million in July, in sales and use tax. There has been a significant increase in collections this year. The budget anticipates $163.9 million in total collections.

Each month, the city displays its financial report, detailing this year’s financials compared to where things stood last year. While looking at overall financial status, the report also details general fund revenue broken down by department, general fund expenditures and encumbrances, nongeneral fund major revenues and year-to-date budget-to-actual expenses and encumbrances.

Expenditures and encumbrances totaled $162.3 million so far this year for the General Fund, with an estimated $307.5 million for the expenditure budget. The General Fund consists of the mayor’s office, city attorney, property standards, human resources, parks and recreation, the Police Department and many others.

The largest expenditures and encumbrances year-to-date from the General Fund were from the Police Department at $45.3 million, general government at $32.9 million, the Fire Department at $37.1 million and Public Works Department at $15.8 million.

The City Council has spent $1 million of its $1.7 million expenditures budget, and the city courts has spent $2.5 million of its $4.2 million budget year-to-date.
