Shreveport’s new police headquarters gets extra $2.8M

(The Center Square) — Shreveport’s plan for a new police headquarters received an additional $2.8 million after the city council voted Tuesday to amend the 2025 Capital Improvements budget.

The vote increases the project’s budget to $31.4 million, to be paid for with general obligation bonds issued in 2021 and the interest earned on the bonds.

The city plans to demolish the current police headquarters and build a new one at the same site. The project reached the design phase in June and is now ready for construction bids. Additional funding was required to bring it in line with pre-bid estimates, according to the city.

The city hopes to have the headquarters completed by December 2027.

The council suspended the rules to quickly vote on the ordinance after learning that Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux needed to leave the meeting for medical care.

Arceneaux was admitted into the hospital for bacterial pneumonia, according to a press release Wednesday.

“I had hoped to continue working through my illness in order to attend Tuesday’s City Council meeting,” Arceneaux said in a statement. “However, after developing a fever, my physicians recommended a short hospital stay for observation and recovery.”

Arceneaux is receiving treatment from Willis-Knighton Health System.
