Six dead, 10 injured in small town Mississippi shooting

(The Center Square) – Six people are dead, and 10 others injured after a shooting following a homecoming high school football game in Mississippi on Friday night.

Initial reports of four dead grew by two, authorities in the small community of Leland said Sunday morning. Gunfire happened close to midnight downtown where people gathered after the game and not on the campus of Leland High School.

At a Saturday news conference, Mayor John Lee said, “We don’t have any information as far as who did the shooting or any of that. But we are here to get to the bottom of this.”

Those confirmed dead on Friday were ages 18, 19, 25 and 41. An 18-year-old and a 34-year-old also died.

Leland is a community of less than 4,000.

The shooting was one of five gaining attention in the nation’s 35th most populous state. A shooting at a high school Friday night in Heidelberg left two dead.

At South Delta High in Rolling Fork, two arrests were made and a gunshot victim was hospitalized in stable condition. The shooting happened at a high school football game.

Also under investigation from the weekend are shootings on Saturday at Alcorn State that left one dead and two injured, and a shooting at Jackson State that send a child to the hospital.
