(The Center Square) – Investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives and its respective Committee on Ethics is welcomed, says a North Carolina congressman.
Responding to a published report citing sources, Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards said there’s no surprise in false accusations. He cited the nation’s political climate.
Edwards is bidding for a third term in November against Democratic challenger Jamie Ager.
“I welcome any investigation, given the professionalism my staff has demonstrated and my commitment to serving the people of western North Carolina,” Edwards said in a statement to WLOS. “Given the current political environment we are facing in our nation, it comes as no surprise that others with their own political agendas will attempt to raise false accusations in order to create news stories.”
The Committee on Ethics has made no public statements since the resignation of Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. The same day, April 20, it put out a statement related to “maintaining a congressional workplace free from sexual misconduct and ensuring that any individuals responsible for misconduct are held responsible for their behavior.”
The earliest published reports on the probe say Edwards is under investigation for sexual harassment.
