(The Center Square) – Former Gov. Roy Cooper’s campaign for U.S. Senate will get a slice of $50 million given by the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy.
Aimed at winning key congressional campaigns, Democrats chasing Senate seats in Georgia, Michigan, Maine and Ohio are also going to get a boost. Races for the U.S. House of Representatives in Iowa and Pennsylvania are also targeted in the political action committee’s quest for support for child and elder care.
The campaign says it is building “grassroots support for solutions that would transform the lives of American families, like paid family and medical leave, lower cost prescription drugs and affordable elder and child care. At the ballot box, CFFE PAC helps elect candidates who fight for working families and who support policies including paid leave, affordable child care, earned sick days and livable wages.”
Cooper is up against Republican Michael Whatley on Nov. 3 in what observers believe will be a record-setting spending spree for a Senate seat. Cooper had two terms as governor and four as attorney general. Whatley is chasing his first elected office on the strength of chairmanships for the Republican National Committee and the North Carolina Republican Party.
The latest poll released Monday from Public Policy Polling has Cooper leading 47%-44%, the closest difference since the candidates declared in July.
Through Feb. 11, Cooper’s cash on hand stood at more than $14.2 million and Whatley at $2.5 million.
