(The Center Square) – Certification a person has been granted an automatic federal extension is necessary for North Carolina tax filers to get an automatic extension for their state income tax filing beyond Thursday of next week.
The state filing deadline was changed from April 15 to May 1 on Oct. 3, the week after Hurricane Helene hit. Lawmakers returning to Raleigh after this weekend could consider another extension that would match the Sept. 25 date the IRS confirmed last week.
Because information in many cases for the state return comes from the federal return, there is a watch for potential action on Jones Street. The IRS announcement came the same day the General Assembly members were on the way home for Easter.
Both the Senate and House of Representatives gavel in on Monday, with no votes expected before Tuesday.
The Department of Revenue says if total gross income from all sources inside and outside of the state exceeds the amount found in the filing chart, a federal income tax return must be attached to the state return.
Helene killed 107 and caused an estimated $60 billion damage.
The storm made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Dekle Beach, Fla., on Sept. 26. It dissipated over the mountains of the state and Tennessee, dropping more than 30 inches in some places and over 24 consistently across more.
