(Carolina Journal) – Rob Harrington has been chosen to succeed Vi Lyles as Charlotte mayor and says he does not plan to seek election once his term ends in December 2027.
Charlotte City Council on Monday named Harrington to the post for the final 17 months of Lyles’ unexpired term. Lyles earlier tendered her resignation effective at the end of the month.
Lyles has served as mayor of Charlotte since 2017 and secured a decisive reelection victory in 2025, defeating Republican challenger Terrie Donovan 70%-25%.
The council selected Harrington following a multi-week process that drew more than 100 applicants. After a series of nominations and public interviews, the finalists were Harrington, former Councilman Harold Cogdell, Carrie Cook, Mayor Pro Tem James Mitchell Jr., and state Sen. Caleb Theodros.
Harrington is president of the North Carolina Bar Association and has held numerous positions, including previously being chairman of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Board. This is his first time in public office.
During interviews with council members, Harrington emphasized the importance of restoring trust and improving collaboration within city government. He described himself as a process person and said he wants to ensure city leaders have the information necessary to make informed decisions on major issues facing Charlotte.
Among the challenges awaiting the new mayor are ongoing debates over transportation, growth, crime, and infrastructure in one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities.
“Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life,” Lyles said in early May. “I am proud of our record navigating various challenges, strengthening our economy, investing in our neighborhoods, and building a foundation for Charlotte’s continued success during a time of rapid growth. Now, it is time for the next phase of my life, to spend more time with my grandchildren and for someone new to lead us forward.”
