(The Center Square) – Nearly 5,800 households in North Carolina were totally displaced by Hurricane Helene, and more than 2,400 are utilizing assistance means.
Auditor Dave Boliek, introducing the Helene Recovery Dashboard on the website of North Carolina Office of the State Auditor, said transparency in the recovery process is vital and was promised. Data is available by county and updated automatically each week, with questions and answers for temporary housing; repair of private roads and bridges; links to assistance with the state Department of Public Safety and the Federal Emergency Management Agency; and links to Department of Transportation road information and the state auditor’s tipline.
“On Day 1 the state auditor’s office committed to bringing transparency and accountability to hurricane recovery, and I’m proud of the work our team has done to produce the Helene Recovery Dashboard,” Boliek said in a release. “This is an easy-to-navigate tool that shows how many people are in hotels and how many people are displaced, and I look forward to building it out further as North Carolina continues to recover.”
Helene struck the state on the last weekend of September. Recovery is in the 20th week.
The dashboard, as of Tuesday afternoon, reported 5,767 total households displaced; 2,112 total housed; 323 seeking assistance; and 3,332 not utilizing assistance. The last update was Saturday.
