Highway report drops North Carolina from 1st to 4th

(The Center Square) – From first to fourth, North Carolina’s administrative ratio remains among the best in the country in the Reason Foundation’s Annual Highway Report.

The Tarheel State was among the most cost-effective road systems, measuring condition, safety and costs of roads and bridges in all 50 states. In 12 other categories, North Carolina was third in other administrative disbursements ratio, seventh in maintenance disbursements ratio, eighth in capital and bridge disbursements ratio, and ninth in other disbursements.

The worst scores were 33rd in other fatality rate and 31st in rural fatality rate.

The state was second overall in 2024.

The report says the largest decline was in urbanized area congestion, going from No. 21 to No. 30. The best improvement was in rural fatality rate, going from No. 39 to No. 31.

“Four of the top five states overall, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and Ohio, rank among the 15 most populous states in the country, showing that big states with large and busy road networks can make progress and maintain good quality, cost-effective road networks,” said Reason Foundation’s Baruch Feigenbaum, lead author of the report.

Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio, respectively, were the top half of the top 10. They are followed by North Dakota, Connecticut, Alabama, Missouri and Utah.
