Poll: Concerns high for 8 in 10 on economic staples of life

(The Center Square) – More than 8 in 10 North Carolinians have high concerns for food and consumer goods, the nation’s economy and housing prices, a new poll says.

The state’s economy, personal and family economics, and prices for gasoline and energy are named by 7 in 10, says the Catawba-YouGov Survey released Tuesday.

The Center for North Carolina Politics & Public Service at Catawba College said 29% of respondents placed blame with Democrats in Congress for the record-setting federal government shutdown and 23% with Republicans in Congress. Another 18% said second-term Republican President Donald Trump is to blame.

“The division among North Carolina partisans reflects the nation’s divided state,” said Dr. Michael Bitzer, director of the Center for North Carolina Politics & Public Service.

“Over two-thirds of self-identified North Carolina Democrats blame Washington Republicans, while 56% of North Carolina Republicans blame the Democratic Party,” Bitzer noted. “Among North Carolina independents, 35% blame Republicans, 26% hold Democrats responsible, and a third – 34% – say it is both parties’ fault.”

The poll sampled 1,000 people Oct. 16-24 and offered a 3.79% margin of error.

The economy questions were framed as, “How concerned are you about the following over the next year?” and included 11 choices. Nine topics of comparison were given for the June poll and this October analysis, with all nine going up.
