Poll: Democrats lead five Council of State samplings

(The Center Square) – Five North Carolina Council of State races were checked, and Democrats lead all five including the governor’s race by 21 points, according to an Elon University poll released Tuesday.

In the presidential race, it’s even at 46% each for Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, each of whom visits the state on Wednesday. The Republican former president is scoring well with men (48%), whites (57%) and at 15% better than the 8% national average with Blacks four years ago. The Democratic vice president scores better with unaffiliated registered voters (41%), women (48%) and Blacks (79%).

Democrat Josh Stein, the second-term attorney general, leads Republican first-term Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson 52%-31%. State Sen. Rachel Hunt has a 41%-36% lead on Republican Hal Weatherman in the matchup for lieutenant governor.

In the only matchup nationwide of two U.S. House of Representatives members in a statewide duel, Rep. Jeff Jackson leads Rep. Dan Bishop 43%-38% in the race for attorney general. Elaine Marshall, seeking to work with a sixth different governor since first winning in 1996, leads Chad Brown 41%-36%.

In a race with intense back-and-forth, Mo Green leads Michele Morrow 43%-35% in the quest to be superintendent of public instruction.

The Elon University Poll was conducted in partnership with The Charlotte Observer, The News & Observer, The Durham Herald-Sun and field by polling firm YouGov on Oct. 10-17. The sample size is 800 registered voters with a +/- 3.99% margin of error.

The poll checked impact of Hurricane Helene (20% more likely to vote because of it; 68% of Democrats like federal and state agency response and 24% of Republicans do); whether Trump would accept results (49% are not at all confident he will); and trust in the U.S. Supreme Court for presidential election outcome cases (47% said no trust or only a little).
